TMD / Bruxism Treatment

at County Road Dental Practice

We now offer a clinical treatment with Botulinum Toxin Type A injected into the masseter muscles.

The aim of this procedure is to reduce the symptoms of bruxism (clenching or grinding), decrease muscle hypertrophy (bulkiness), and alleviate jaw pain, tension, or associated headaches. This treatment works by temporarily weakening the masseter muscle, reducing its ability to contract forcefully.

The procedure involves small intramuscular injections of Botulinum Toxin using a fine needle. The treatment usually takes 10–20 minutes and does not require anaesthesia. The effects typically start within 3–10 days, peak at around 4 weeks, and last approximately 3–6 months. Repeat treatments maybe required to maintain results.

Botulinum Toxin injections should not be administered in the following cases:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Neuromuscular disorder (e.g., Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton Syndrome, ALS)
  • Known allergy to Botulinum Toxin or its components (such as human albumin)
  • Active infection or skin condition at the proposed injection site
  • Received Botulinum Toxin injections within the past 3 months in the same area
